AYALA SERFATY: SOMA

AYALA SERFATY: SOMA

Thin filaments of glass were woven to produce spatial structures which were sprayed with a polymer to generate a skin-like crust, a membrane of sorts. The installation originated in materials research in which Serfaty has engaged since 2002. The manual work process is akin to a transformation of a calligraphic drawing into a three dimensional form, and was executed in collaboration with glass artists Eytan Hall and Anna Gautier. In the course of six years of work, natural "landscape formations" have crystallized to spawn the current installation: a topography of light.

Ayaya Serfaty (b. 1962) studied in the Department of Fine Arts, Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, during the 1980s, and subsequently at Middlesex Polytechnic, London. In 1994, her first solo exhibition was staged at the Artifact Gallery, Tel Aviv. Her works have since been exhibited in Israel and the world over.
