W. Eugene Smith - A Selection of Works from the Museum Collection

W. Eugene Smith
A Selection of Works from the Museum Collection

American photographer W. Eugene Smith (1918–1978) developed and perfected the concept of ”photo essay“ and created the model for ”humanistic photojournalism.“ Smith regarded the photograph as the last word and believed photography could lead to social change. His photo essays, published mostly in Life, documented forsaken and ill-fated locations in the USA and worldwide. The exhibition focuses on single images from his major documentary series, which epitomize his social and artistic commitment.
