Since its founding, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s collection has grown and evolved on two parallel tracks — domestic and international. It comprises extensive collections of modern and contemporary art, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, including items of the finest art from Israel and the world at large, in a range of fields: painting, sculpture, print, drawing, photography, video, installations, architecture, and design. The Museum holds the world’s largest collection of Israeli art, since its inception to the present day, which it works assiduously to document and preserve. In addition, the collections include rare masterpieces that heralded and established modern art in the world, as well as a unique collection of European art from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries.

The Museum’s collection is continually enriched — both through purchase (especially in the field of Israeli art) and donations of individual works or collections from artists and philanthropists from Israel and around the world.

Conservation

The main function of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s conservation work is to care for the artworks in its collection and to keep them in exhibition-ready condition at all times. In addition, conservation involves taking preventive measures to maintain the artworks’ integrity, notwithstanding the sensitivity of their component materials, whether traditional or otherwise, to light, heat, humidity, and other forms of damage. Conservation efforts also extend to the Museum’s ongoing curatorial and exhibition-mounting activities. These efforts range from constant examination of the artworks’ condition, to securing the appropriate physical conditions in the exhibition spaces (e.g. temperature, humidity, type of nails, and even composition of the walls). Last but not least, the Museum’s conservationists also supervise the handling of artworks on loan to various museums around the world, as they are prepared for shipping.

19 Israeli works of art were purchased in 2023 for the museum’s collection by its Voting for Art Acquisition Group.

Photography and Copyright Services

The Museum allows artists in different fields, advertisers, designers, and publishing houses to order digital photographs from the data base of quality photographs of works in the Museum collection.

Viewing of items from the collection

The Museum invites scholars, collectors, and students to observe at close hand over 30,000 drawings and prints from its collection, including works on paper, drawings in artist books, illustrated books in a variety of techniques, and so forth. It allows for personal study and research through focused and intimate viewing of works from specific periods or of specific artists.
