DIVER FESTIVAL – CONTEMPORARY DANCE IN TLV
Saturday 20 September 2014
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
It is clear that dance in Israel is in the midst of a transformation. It seems that dance practitioners demand to sense what is happening to the dancing body in real-time, to think dance, to search for new images that may appear on and through the body and maybe even call for the “new”.
In DIVER FESTIVAL 2014 we will attempt to touch the “politicity of dance”. This does not mean the festival will necessarily present ‘”political dance”, or try to recruit dance as a political endeavor. But, we will offer various “dives” into dance, which might reveal its unique “politicity”. Whether it is the way dance touches reality and society, or through the investigation of the medium that shows the specific artistic operation of dance.
During 3 weekends the festival will unfold around the city where we will present dance from Israel and abroad and conduct discussions, screenings, and workshops. Some of the events will explore Israeli society through dance, some will confront the specific politicity of dance, and others will offer images or ideas that will reveal how dance passes through the familiar and thus offer its politicity. For example, Arkadi Zaides reveals what happened to the Israeli body after decades of occupation;Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud address the body’s limits and sexual taboo; Lilach Livne asks about the dancing body’s ability to be both virtual and real; and Itzik Giuli creates an encounter between a dancer and a philosopher. The discourse events will, for example, revolve around dance and ideology during the beginning of Israel/Palestine, dance as a global arena of knowledge, about the work of Steve Paxton and Yvonne Rainer, which examine the theme of war.
We invite you to join us at the forefront of dance in Israel – to a festival, which includes various events that ask you to relate to dance as an art form, and not just a brand or recreational activity. Of course we will enjoy, and mostly be excited, by the ability of dance to touch reality and be a real act in the world.
