Renewal of the Old Masters Galleries

The Tel Aviv Museum’s Department of Old Masters was established in 1988 and includes Dutch and Flemish works from the 16th–17th centuries, Italian art from the 17th–18th centuries and various works of English, French and German origin of this era. Within its four galleries, the collection also features a room of important Jewish masters from the 19th-century, among them Maurycy Gottlieb (Jews Praying in the Synagogue on Yom Kippur) and Jozef Israels. The galleries have undergone a recent renovation to adapt each room to the spirit and time of the works showcased, whether historical paintings, statues, artifacts or a collection of miniature period rooms. Each gallery was given a different hue, the choice of bold colors echoing the deep tonal atmosphere of the palaces and mansions of former epochs, where the works originally hung. Among these, one of the most outstanding is a wall dedicated to the so-called Caravaggisti, followers of the famed 17th-century Italian Baroque painter Caravaggio, noted for his dramatic compositions (and volatile character). Mostly mid- to large-size tableaux, they include Dutch master Gerard van Honthorst's The Death of Seneca, part of the Schorr Collection, on long-term loan to the museum. Since the reopening, visitors have reacted enthusiastically to the new rooms, which offer a rich and enhanced experience of European masterpieces.

T-ART: When Fashion Meets Art

The fusion of fashion and art drew over 1,500 visitors to four successful T-Art special events in August. The project was a collaboration between local fashion company Castro and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Iconic works from the Museum’s collection by renowned artists such as Michal Rovner, Ori Gersht, Menashe Kadishman and Nahum Gutman were printed on T-shirts for women and men, displayed in a pop-up shop at the entrance to the Herta and Paul Amir Building. A special program was held on Thursday evenings from 9 p.m. to midnight, open to the public free of charge. An array of happenings was met with great enthusiasm by young and adult audiences alike. Highlights included guided tours of the Museum’s collection of Old Masters as well as contemporary video works in “Turn On”. Lectures by curators on the paintings of Hagit Lalo and the photography of Robert Capa were well attended.

International friends of Tel Aviv Museum of Art and their families attended a reception at the Lola Beer Ebner Sculpture Garden hosted by Director and Chief Curator Suzanne Landau, followed by a private tour of the season’s flagship exhibition, "The Museum Presents Itself 2 — Israeli Art from the Museum Collection," guided by senior curator Ellen Ginton and of the exhibition, "Turn On" Time-based Media Art from the Julia Stoschek Collection, guided by curator Ruth Direktor.

His Excellency, Mr Francesco Talo Ambassador of Italy to Israel, the Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo and Suzanne Landau inaugurated The Daniela Di Gioacchino Foyer the space connecting the innovative Children’s Exhibition to the Kaufmann-Gitter Auditorium in memory of Daniela Di Gioacchino, beloved daughter of Gloria Di Gioacchino. 

On Sunday, February 1st in evening, we inaugurated the Daniela Di Gioacchino Foyer in the presence of His Excellency, Francesco Talo, Ambassador of Italy to Israel and Ms. Ornella Talo, Ron Huldai, Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo and Chairperson of the Museum’s International Board of Governors and Ms. Yael Huldai, Suzanne Landau, Director and Chief Curator, Ambassador Avi Pazner and Marty, Anna Sikos, President of A.M.A.T.A., and Gloria
Di Gioacchino who generously contributed this place in memory of her beloved daughter.
The Daniela Di Gioacchino Foyer is a crossroad which connects the Museum’s innovative and interactive Children exhibition and the Kaufmann-Gitter auditorium where lectures and symposia take place as well as the ongoing screening of high level films. It is a point of intersection between the arts and art education, and the memory of Daniela Di Gioacchino will be from now on a part of our Museum family and always in our hearts.
