The Man Who Saved the Louvre | Pierre Pochart, Jean-Pierre Devillers, France, 2014, 60 minutes, English with
Hebrew subtitles
Introduction: Nathalie Andrijasevic, Assistant Curator of Modern Art (in Hebrew)

In 1938, when France was still hoping that Hitler would not invade it, one man, Jacques Jaujard, deputy Director of the French Musées Nationaux in Paris, was pessimistic. He realized that if Paris were to be occupied, a treasure of great works of art would be destroyed. For Jaujard, the loss of the artistic heritage stored at the Louvre was akin to losing humanity’s soul. In late August 1939, ten days before France declared war on Germany, Jaujard closed the Louvre. That night, 800 works of art were packed. Jaujard’s act of deliverance is at the center of this thrilling film, which uses filmed historical testimonies and fills in the tale with animation that imbues an almost-fantastic sense into this tale of one almost-anonymous man’s vision and courage in saving the Louvre.
