Jean Paul Gaultier Freak & Chic / Preview Screening and Lecture

Long queues trail outside the famous Folies Bergère in Paris. Tonight is the opening night of the show everyone has been waiting for. Later, the show will travel the world: Germany, Australia, Italy, Russia, Canada, USA, Japan, China and Austria. Two years of preparations – music, choreography, hundreds of dancers and models, attention to the tiniest details and timing by the split second, with exhilarating colors, and all in order to tell the story of the one and only.

A special lecture preceding this new film will follow Jean Paul Gaultier’s complex world and will try to understand whether this is an artistic genius or a marketing mastermind, and why his decision to focus on the theater was inevitable. Liroy Choufan is a lecturer at the History and Philosophy Department of Shenkar Academy of Design and a Fashion Researcher at the Hebrew University Cultural Studies Program. He publishes essays in Haaretz, Portfolio and various international platforms such as The Business of Fashion and the style magazine Wallpaper*.

Jean Paul Gaultier, French fashion’s "enfant terrible," is a designer who presents a complex and controversial portrait of the world: on the one hand, he is in charge of celebrated haute couture fashion shows and the grandiose attire of stars like Madonna, and on the other hand he is the designer of simple and accessible prêt-à-porter fashion such as the iconic striped sailor shirt, and producer of one of the best-selling perfume collections.

Director: Yann L'Hénoret
Stars: Marion Cotillard, Catherine Deneuve, Madonna, Rossy de Palma
France 2018 | 130 minutes | French (Hebrew subtitles)

The movie trails the preparations for Gaultier’s most ambitions show and follows the figure of a genius and the provocative world which he creates through “high style” choreography, original music and extravagant costumes. This is French creation at its highest, through the eyes and audacity of an artist who pushes the boundaries of the impossible. It is a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes of a unique show, with guest performances by Catherine Deneuve, Madonna, Rossy de Palma, Marion Cotillard and many celebrities who respect him and enjoy his uniquely imaginative designs.
