Cinema-Museum for the Whole Family / Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, 2021

Out of Proportions!
What happens when a little girl suddenly becomes a giant? When children shrink to the size of an ant? And what does the world look like through the eyes of a gentle giant, a tiny shell, or a gigantic peach?

This summer film series for children and families invites audiences into worlds where proportions are turned upside down—and imagination expands along with them. Through beloved, funny, moving, and adventurous films, we will journey between the small and the enormous, the miniature and the colossal, discovering different perspectives on the world around us.

The series is inspired by the exhibitions Beyond Small / Miniature Worlds in Contemporary Art and Tom Wesselmann: All Out / From the Marie and Jose Mugrabi Collection, both of which explore scale, proportion, and the ways in which changes in size can completely transform how we see, feel, and experience the world.

The films will be screened throughout the summer on Fridays and Saturdays. Each screening stands on its own, allowing families to choose a favorite film or return again and again for another adventure.

After each screening, children and parents are invited to continue their visit in the museum galleries, explore the exhibitions, and discover additional worlds of giant and tiny, near and far, reality and imagination through a special family activity kit.

The Activity Kit

A filmmaker has set out in search of inspiration for a new movie—but she needs your help.

After each screening, children will receive a special activity kit. Through questions, unusual choices, and word-completion games, they will help build a story from scratch: Who are the heroes? What happens in the story? How does it end?

Little by little, each child will create their unique story — personal, funny, and full of surprises.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, 2021 | Director: Dean Fleischer Camp | USA | 89 min | English with Hebrew subtitles

Marcel is an adorable one-inch-tall shell whose colorful life unfolds alongside his grandmother Connie and Alan, a fuzzy ball of lint who serves as their pet. Once part of a large shell community, they now live alone as the survivors of a mysterious tragedy. Everything changes when a documentary filmmaker discovers them, records a short video, and uploads it online. The result is millions of devoted fans, unexpected dangers, and perhaps even hope for finding Marcel’s long-lost family.

The film is in English with Hebrew subtitles. Recommended for children aged 7+ and their parents
