The Museum is delighted to launch a new series of events linking its ongoing exhibitions with movies from Israel and abroad. Waltz with Bashir | dir. Ari Folman (2008)
90 minutes, Hebrew with Hebrew subtitles

How likely are you to remember what you went through in a war twenty years ago? Twenty-five years ago? Time flies but memory does not rest, it keeps deceiving you again and again. Waltz with Bashir is a rare journey into a personal memory, using a revolutionary combination of documentary film and animation. Director Ari Folman collaborated with illustrator David Polonsky and animation director Yoni Goodman to document the process of delving into the director’s memory. Folman wanders between characters, among them close friends, forgotten army comrades, post-trauma specialists and journalists who reported that war and the ones that followed it. Together they slowly piece a fantastic puzzle of pure, harsh realism that constructs the horrors of war. The film’s subject is the Lebanon war, but the puzzle fits many more wars that have taken place, are taking place and will take place in our world.

The film won many awards, among them the Golden Globe, the Cesar Award and the Ophir Prize; and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards, 2009. In almost all cases, this was a first-ever award to an Israeli film, a documentary film or an animated film.
